Iranian Delegation Departs After Trump’s Threat; Talks Still Proceeding

In a significant development during ongoing talks in Switzerland, Iran’s delegation momentarily left the negotiation venue following fresh warnings from US President Donald Trump concerning Tehran’s support for Hezbollah. The incident raised questions about the prospects of these talks, which aim to reduce regional tensions. Despite the brief exit, a diplomat indicated that Iran had not abandoned the discussions and continued to participate actively.

The Iranian delegation’s departure occurred after a meeting with Qatari mediators, prompted by Trump’s threats of military action unless Iran curbs Hezbollah’s activities. Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, responded assertively to Trump’s statements, emphasizing that Iran’s military forces were ready to respond if provoked.

The initial round of discussions primarily focused on executing the newly signed US-Iran memorandum of understanding and addressing the Lebanese situation. Notably, Iran’s nuclear program was not included in the initial agenda. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance characterized the negotiations as a “historic meeting” and expressed optimism for a lasting enhancement in regional relations.

The talks occur against a backdrop of heightened tensions in Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials maintain that achieving sustainable progress toward a final agreement hinges on resolving hostilities in Lebanon. Despite some differences, both parties remain engaged in the dialogue, aiming to reach a comprehensive settlement within the next 60 days.
