As India and the European Union (EU) work towards finalizing a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the year’s end, the EU has underscored India’s role as one of its most crucial strategic partners. This deepening relationship is reflected in their expanding cooperation across various sectors, including trade, technology, security, and connectivity. The significance of this partnership was highlighted by Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly at the commencement of Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Ambassador Kelly emphasized that the EU’s collaboration with India extends substantially beyond mere trade. It encompasses pivotal areas like technology, research, climate action, maritime security, resilient supply chains, and digital cooperation. As global challenges mount, both India and the EU are strengthening their ties to foster long-term economic growth and address shared concerns.
The impending India-EU Free Trade Agreement, with negotiations already concluded, is anticipated to be signed by December, potentially taking effect early next year. This agreement marks a significant step forward in their relationship. Meanwhile, both parties have also broadened their collaborative efforts in critical sectors such as defense, security, and emerging technologies, adapting to dynamic global economic and geopolitical landscapes.
EU Ambassador Herve Delphin noted that Europe and India are navigating a shifting global environment by striving for greater strategic autonomy while maintaining robust partnerships. He underscored the necessity of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring secure global trade routes. Delphin called for enhanced cooperation between India and the EU in maritime security and regional stability to better address these evolving challenges.
