Recognize Critical Chest Pain Symptoms: Differentiate Gas from Heart Issues

Chest discomfort can sometimes be a warning sign of heart-related issues, not just a symptom of indigestion or acidity, experts warn. Given the proximity of the heart and digestive system, pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart may mimic digestive discomfort, manifesting as burning, pressure, or tightness in the chest.

Recognizing these symptoms can be crucial. Heart-related chest pain often feels like pressure, squeezing, or heaviness, and it may persist for several minutes, recur, or be triggered by physical exertion or stress. Pain spreading to the arms, neck, jaw, or upper back can also indicate heart trouble, as can accompanying symptoms such as shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, dizziness, and unusual fatigue.

Distinguishing between gas and heart pain at home is challenging, as both conditions can produce similar symptoms. While acid reflux typically causes a post-meal burning sensation, sometimes accompanied by a sour taste, these do not exclude the possibility of a heart issue. Similarly, relief from antacids does not confirm indigestion as the cause.

Individuals with risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, or existing heart disease should be particularly cautious about new chest discomfort. A history of smoking or a family history of early heart disease further increases the risk of cardiovascular issues.

In cases of severe or persistent chest discomfort, especially when accompanied by breathlessness, sweating, dizziness, or radiating pain, seeking immediate medical evaluation is advised. When in doubt, it is safer to opt for a professional assessment rather than assuming the symptoms are benign.
