Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin has warned that the full scope of suffering in Gaza, once fully documented, could potentially shame the world. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Martin criticized the international community for failing Palestine and argued that past peace efforts have not resulted in significant improvements on the ground.
Martin expressed concern over the increasing difficulty of achieving a two-state solution, pointing to the actions of violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank, whom he accused of operating with near-total impunity. He described the ongoing displacement and destruction faced by Palestinian communities as amounting to ethnic cleansing. Despite these challenges, Martin reiterated Ireland’s support for a two-state solution, advocating for peaceful coexistence between a Palestinian state and an Israeli state.
In his address, Martin also highlighted the need for renewed negotiations between the United States and Iran. He emphasized that Iran should not develop nuclear weapons and called for an end to its destabilizing activities in the region. Additionally, he urged nations to support international institutions such as the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, underscoring the importance of commitment to peace, human rights, and development.
Beyond the Middle East, Martin focused on the ongoing war in Ukraine, attributing continued conflict to Russia’s actions. He noted the resulting impact on global food and energy costs. Ireland’s aspirations to secure a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term were also mentioned during his speech.
