Tánaiste Simon Harris has said that while tariffs are generally negative for trade, the new US tariff agreement with the European Union offers “some degree of certainty” for businesses. The deal imposes a 15% tariff on EU goods, including those from Ireland, but Harris noted that the rate is lower than what many other countries face.
He emphasised the importance of clarity in the trading environment and confirmed that further talks are underway to secure exemptions for specific sectors. Harris highlighted the drinks industry as a priority for Ireland, pushing for a “zero-for-zero” arrangement on spirits, though he cautioned this may take time to achieve.
Pharmaceuticals are also covered under the agreement, but concerns remain after US President Donald Trump threatened higher rates in the future. Harris proposed creating an EU-level task force to protect the sector, bringing together relevant member states, industry representatives, and the European Commission to present a united stance in negotiations with the United States.
