In a significant expansion of its digital payment capabilities, WhatsApp now allows users to pay utility bills directly through its messaging platform. This new feature enables seamless management of everyday expenses such as electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards, and loan repayments, all within the app.
Powered by the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), the service supports transactions with more than 22,700 billers across 30 different categories. Users can easily navigate to the bill payment option from the WhatsApp home screen, select the appropriate bill category and provider, enter their account details, and review the bill amount before proceeding with the payment.
WhatsApp’s bill payment feature accommodates various payment methods including Unified Payments Interface (UPI), debit cards, and credit cards. Additionally, users can track past payments, monitor upcoming bills, and manage multiple accounts with the same service provider, enhancing convenience and financial oversight.
This development marks a strategic move to position WhatsApp as a comprehensive digital-services platform, enabling users to conduct payments and manage routine tasks without the need to switch between different applications. The integration of messaging platforms with digital financial services underscores the tech industry’s push to facilitate more accessible payment solutions within existing ecosystems.
