Hungarian MEPs from the FIDESZ–KDNP alliance have voiced criticism against the European Commission for not addressing recent constitutional and political changes in Hungary, which they argue are detrimental to the country’s democratic framework. This issue was highlighted during a recent joint session involving the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control.
During the meeting, MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the Commission to clarify its stance on several contentious issues. These included constitutional amendments, limitations on political competition, alterations affecting parliamentary mandates, and the perceived erosion of the independence of state institutions. The members expressed their concern over whether these changes align with the democratic standards upheld by the European Union.
The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation argued that the European Commission had previously raised alarms over rule-of-law issues in Hungary, which led to the withholding of EU funds. However, they pointed out that the Commission has remained silent on these latest developments, raising questions about the consistency of the EU’s approach to democratic principles across its member states.
In their statement, the lawmakers emphasized the necessity for democratic principles to be uniformly applied throughout the EU. They stressed that the lack of a detailed response from the Commission during the hearing was concerning, as it left uncertainties regarding the EU’s position on Hungary’s recent constitutional changes.
