Under the Radar: The Rise of the Next Generation in Iranian Politics

The death of the Supreme Leader in a joint US-Israeli operation has accelerated a generational shift within the Iranian leadership. As the old guard mourns, a new, more militarily focused elite is preparing to take the reigns. This transition is happening under the watchful eyes of an IRGC that has become the backbone of the state’s survival.
Domestic tensions are at an all-time high, despite the lack of organized protests. The state has used the recent “death to the leader” broadcast incident as a pretext for purging dissenters from official positions. The massive security presence in Tehran is a clear sign that the government is taking no chances with its own survival during this delicate period.
The constitutional process for succession is now in full swing. An interim council, consisting of the president and judicial heads, is managing the transition. However, the real decision-making power lies with the Assembly of Experts, who are under immense pressure to select a leader who can unify the country’s competing political and military factions.
Mojtaba Khamenei is a central figure in this transition. His potential succession is viewed as a “safe bet” for the military, but a risky move for the clerical establishment’s legitimacy. The outcome of this struggle will define the Islamic Republic for the next generation, potentially leading to a more overtly military form of government.
One of the key casualties of this transition could be the “nuclear fatwa.” The religious prohibition against the development of nuclear weapons was deeply tied to the late leader’s personal authority. In his absence, the IRGC may push for a more aggressive posture, arguing that the recent airstrikes demonstrate the inadequacy of conventional deterrence.
