Households in Ireland are facing a steep rise in home heating oil prices, with the cost of filling a standard 1,000-litre tank soaring to €1,443.88 in September 2026. This marks a significant increase from the €909.24 price tag in September 2025, translating to a €534.64 hike, or a 59% surge over the past year.
The escalation in prices is primarily attributed to global oil supply disruptions, a consequence of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Ireland’s dependency on kerosene for home heating exacerbates the situation, as this fuel is also in demand for aviation purposes, further straining supply.
As the colder months loom, many households are eager to refill their tanks, often comparing rates among different suppliers. However, some consumers are opting to purchase smaller quantities or delay their buying decisions, hoping for a potential drop in prices. The substantial increase in heating oil costs has sparked renewed calls for government intervention.
Despite these calls, suppliers emphasize that pricing is largely dictated by global market fluctuations, which can change significantly day by day. Industry representatives have dismissed accusations of profiteering, explaining that suppliers operate with limited stocks and must continuously buy oil at current market rates.
