Iran-US Tensions Push Oil Prices Up Amid Supply Disruption Fears

Global oil prices experienced a significant rise, climbing by over $2 per barrel, primarily due to escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. The geopolitical friction has cast doubt on the prospects of achieving a diplomatic resolution, further fueling concerns about potential disruptions in the Middle East’s oil supply.

Brent crude futures increased by $2.06, or 1.9%, reaching $110.85 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude saw a rise of $2.13, or 2.2%, to $99.95 per barrel. Both benchmarks have recently hit multi-month highs, driven by growing uncertainty in global energy markets.

The situation intensified after statements from Iranian officials. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized Iran’s readiness to defend itself, while President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed skepticism over the potential for meaningful dialogue with the US under ongoing blockades and threats. These remarks have contributed to concerns that the tensions between the two nations might persist.

Compounding the uncertainty are ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine situation, which have heightened worries about the safety of crucial shipping routes for crude oil. Reports of attacks on maritime traffic beyond the Strait of Hormuz, especially around the Gulf of Oman, have raised fears of broader disruptions to oil shipments. Additionally, Yemen’s Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure and airports, further intensifying regional security concerns.

In the US, efforts are underway to boost fuel production in collaboration with international refiners. The country’s crude inventories fell by 4.9 million barrels for the week ending October 16, with declines also noted in gasoline and distillate stocks, providing additional upward pressure on oil prices.

As the situation develops, market participants are closely monitoring diplomatic efforts, regional security risks, and inventory trends to better understand the future landscape of global oil supplies and prices.
