She calls for decisive action to combat climate misinformation and accelerate the adoption of clean energy policies. Ribera emphasized that the extreme temperatures currently experienced serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglecting climate change causes.
Temperatures soaring beyond 40°C have been recorded in several European nations, including Germany, Poland, and Hungary, disrupting everyday activities. The scorching heat has led to school closures, affected tourism, heightened wildfire risks, and strained energy systems. Ribera criticized misleading arguments that oppose climate policies, urging that decisions be informed by scientific evidence and the public good.
Defending the European Green Deal, Ribera highlighted widespread public support for initiatives aimed at achieving cleaner air, safer water supplies, renewable energy, and healthier environments. She argued that reducing reliance on fossil fuels is crucial for bolstering Europe’s long-term economic security. The need for a transition to renewable energy is more urgent than ever, she added, to mitigate potential future risks that could arise from delaying climate action.
