Brussels Airlines is set to implement a new fare structure that will eliminate free overhead cabin baggage for passengers purchasing the lowest-priced tickets on short and medium-haul routes. This change will come with the introduction of the Economy Basic fare, which allows only a small personal item, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack that fits under the seat. Currently, travelers with an Economy Light fare can bring both a personal item and a standard cabin bag, but under the new system, those wanting to bring a larger cabin suitcase will need to opt for a higher fare category or pay an additional fee.
The airline plans to test this new fare option starting April 28, with flights under the new policy departing from May 19 on select routes. If successful, Brussels Airlines intends to expand the new fare structure across its European network. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Lufthansa Group, which includes several airlines such as Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti. The group believes the change offers more flexibility, allowing passengers traveling light to enjoy lower fares.
While the airlines claim the change can result in savings for passengers carrying only a personal item, those who regularly travel with cabin luggage might find little difference in overall costs once baggage fees are applied. This shift is anticipated to significantly impact business travelers, frequent flyers, expatriates, and families who rely on cabin baggage to avoid checked luggage charges and the associated airport delays.
Passengers are encouraged to carefully review fare conditions before booking to ensure they understand the total travel cost, including any additional baggage fees, rather than focusing solely on the advertised ticket price. For those traveling light, the new Economy Basic fare could indeed provide a cost-effective option. However, for many others, the cheapest ticket may no longer equate to the lowest overall travel expense.
