In a move reflecting the escalating tensions between Moscow and London, Russia has pulled its ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, after a seven-year tenure. The decision to withdraw Kelin comes as relations between the two nations sour further, largely attributed to Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.
The Russian embassy in London confirmed that Kelin’s diplomatic mission concluded on July 21, without announcing a successor to fill the role. In the interim, Vasily A. Tsyganov, the embassy’s chargé d’affaires, assumes the position of the senior Russian diplomat in the UK.
This diplomatic shift occurs against the backdrop of heightened friction over Britain’s military assistance to Ukraine. Russia has recently issued warnings to Britain about facing “consequences” following reports that British-made attack drones have been supplied to Ukraine for operations against targets within Russian territory.
While the Kremlin has criticized London for adopting a confrontational stance, the UK government has reiterated its commitment to supporting Ukraine. The UK maintains that Ukraine has the right to defend itself against Russia’s aggression and invasion.
The withdrawal of Kelin has sparked speculation regarding Moscow’s future diplomatic engagement with Britain. Despite the move, the Russian embassy has clarified that this action should not be seen as an indication of a formal downgrade in diplomatic relations.
